It’s the start of the hunting season, and every hunter is eager to return to the field. Hunters are cleaning their guns, restocking their ammo, and preparing for the season they have been waiting for. In my area, we start our hunts with doves, and after the birds, we move on to pheasants and partridges.
Russian Doves:
Brown or dark brown migratory doves, also known as Russian doves, originate from Serbia and Russia, migrating to various regions of Pakistan.. They visit twice a year. Their first visit is during the pre-breeding season of April and May, and the second occurs between June and August. Legally and ethically we only hunt Russian doves during September upon their return.
Russian Dove Hunting:
Hunts usually begin once farmers have harvested the wheat crops. The ideal times for these hunts are dusk and dawn. Hunters typically use two main methods to hunt them.
Hunters usually survey the fields for possible flocks of doves and shoot them on their way. This method suits hunters who enjoy sightseeing and like to combine hunting with exercise.
Some hunters (not including myself) take this seriously and use decoys and calls to lure flocks of doves. These hunters usually sit behind camo blinds to conceal themselves.
I don’t prefer the second method because doves are easy targets with predictable flight patterns, making decoys unnecessary. Also, since they’re the first birds we usually hunt at the start of the season, it’s a good opportunity to warm up and practice shooting flying targets before going after pheasants. Frankly, I’ve never liked using an air gun to hunt these birds, as I prefer giving them a fighting chance in flight.. But that’s just my view—everyone has their own comfort zone.
Some rules to be followed:
Every human action is governed by some set of rules. These rules are formulated to bring order. The same applies to hunting—we should follow some basic rules for dove hunting. I’ll list a few here.
Whatever you do, make sure it aligns with government policies and regulations.. Before going on a dove hunt, ensure your hunting license is renewed for the season.
Always try to follow best practices while hunting. Netting, traps and other practices that are not legal should not be used while hunting. If your state laws prohibit auto or semi-auto guns, comply and use legally permitted bores and weapons.
Last but not least, always stay within the bag limit.. You’re not the only one who enjoys hunting. Keep it plain and simple. Hunt within the bag limit and preserve hunts for your fellow hunters and for future generations as well.
